Names servers are part of DNS, which provides name resolution. It is a crucial component of Internet and determines the correct network location for any host name.
DNS uses a network of name servers which share the workload of name resolution. This system can handle large volumes of data very quickly.
In a name server distributed system, each nameserver has a list of IP addresses and host names for these names. These databases contain information that is configured with directives, resource records and zone files.
When a client asks a recursive sever for the name a host, the recursive sever will then query one or several authoritative name servers. They return a response to the recursive sever, and it is cached closer to clients for future queries. A recursive service then returns the response to the user. They can use this information to further query the host.
The resource records of authoritative nameservers map hostnames to IP addresses. These are primary nameservers in each zone.
They are also called the root or top level name servers. These servers are used as the core of the Internet’s domain name systems and maintained by many organizations worldwide.
There are 4 types of name server: master, caching, slave, and forwarding. Each type can be configured in different ways and performs different functions.
Masters are the only servers that have authoritative and original zone records. They also answer queries for that namespace from other name servers.
Slaves receive zone information from their master. This is called zone transfers.
It acts as a secondary server, but not as a zone authority. It stores results of all resolutions for names and returns them after a time period that is determined by retrieved zone records.
Dynamic update is a mechanism that allows entries in zone files to be added, changed, or deleted with the help of a command. The dynamic update option is configured individually for each zone entry by adding an allow-update or update-policy rule.
