Open DNS Resolvers and DoS Attacks

web hosting godaddy

An open DNS resolution is a DNS service that accepts DNS recursive queries from any IP on the Internet. This makes these servers a potential target for Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.

Domain Name System (DNS), an important component of Internet infrastructure, allows for the correct resolution DNS names like the name of website. The system is composed of DNS recursive resolvers and authoritative nameservers which process DNS requests made by clients, such as browsers.

Typically a client sends its DNS query to the stub-resolver, which forwards it to a Recursive resolver. The recursive DNS query is sent to an authoritative DNS server for the root zones by the recursive DNS query. The client is then sent the result of this query.

There are a number of different ways to attack an open DNS resolver, but one of the most common is by sending fake DNS queries to the resolver with the victim's IP address as the source address. Once an attacker generates a large DNS cache, the open DNS resolution will send that record to the IP address of the victim as long the attacker continues to send fake DNS query.

In order to prevent this type of attack, the DNS server must be configured so that it only accepts queries from IP addresses in a specific range. This would typically be the RFC 1918 IPv4 private address space, or the global IPv6 block assigned to an organization.

This can also be achieved by installing a DNS-firewall that restricts access to the resolver. You can do this on the external side of a DNS server that is able to bridge an internal and a external network, or you can limit recursive DNS on the network internal only to hosts that are part of that subnet.

An open DNS resolver is a type of recursive resolver that accepts recursive DNS queries and resolves them in the same way as traditional recursive resolvers. There is a difference between open DNS resolvers and ISP's default DNS. Some of these resolvers offer more robust or faster services. Others censor names based on certain policy settings.

Google Public DNS is, for instance, a very popular open DNS solver in many places and is used as the primary resolver by over 1 in 5 users. The company's reputation as a DNS provider and the reliability of its service are likely to have contributed to this popularity.

Cloudflare Public DNS Resolver has a few features that help detect malicious DNS traffic. This includes the capability to log DNS data including query type (including resolved NS Records), resolver location, and other metadata.

In the experiment, a little over 1 in 6 users use an open DNS resolver as their primary resolver and this increases to over 1 in 3 when the list is widened to include all full resovlers. This indicates that there are many network providers who use these servers as their primary DNS resolvers or as backups.
